Selecting Your Credit Repair Service
It's important to choose wisely when selecting a credit score booster service.
Here are some red flags to watch out for when making your decision.
Background on Credit Repair Companies
Sadly, fraud is rampant in the credit repair industry. The FTC continually snares unscrupulous credit score booster companies that try to take advantage of their customers. In fact, FTC investigations resulted in the identification of 20 fraudulent credit repair companies in February of 2006 alone. The FTC, or the Federal Trade Commission, is the government agency that enforces consumer protection laws. As such, they have put forth several suggestions and warnings on how to select a reputable credit score booster service. They are as follows:
- Your credit score booster service should disclose your rights. If your service makes no mention of your rights as a consumer, you should automatically be suspicious. Mainly, your credit repair service should make clear that you can attempt to repair your own credit for free. Our credit score booster program is for those customers who prefer the added efficacy of professional intervention.
- Be wary of credit score booster services that request advance fees. We do not require any fees in advance for our services. We will charge you only after the initial set-up and our monthly credit score booster services have been rendered.
- Be skeptical of embellished claims of expertise or experience. Often, credit score booster companies will embellish their experience by adding together the collective experience of all staff members. Our company has legitimately specialized in credit score booster services since 1991.
- Don't believe promises of a "new identity." Some credit score booster companies trick customers into believing that they can legally adopt a new identity. This is completely illegal and can result in steep fines and even imprisonment. You can repair your own credit, but you cannot create an entirely new identity.
- There is no such thing as an FTC endorsement. You might see a credit score booster company claim to be endorsed by the FTC as a marketing ploy. However, this is false, as the FTC does not endorse any business. Be wary of any companies that claim to have such an endorsement.
